Here’s What You Should Do If You’re Smarter Than Your Boss!



There is a lot of fluff regarding how bosses and managers should keep their egos aside and appoint employees who are more intelligent than them. That’s because the future, development and growth of the company is more important in order to prosper. However, what if the situation is reversed and you end up being at the receiving end of this thought process? You end up landing a job working for someone who you strongly feel is not as efficient and accomplished as you are.

So, what do you do when you end up being the employee who feels they’re smarter than their own boss?

Here are some tips to help you take care of the situation tactfully!

1.     Concentrate on the job at hand

So having dealt with your manager on multiple occasions have brought you to the realization that you’re indeed way smarter than him/her. If this is in fact true, then the first thing you must do is to get rid of the thought immediately and look beyond it. If you harbour the thought and constantly replay it in your mind every time that you have a conversation with your boss, you are bound to be distracted. Instead of being ‘Whiny Joanna’ or ‘Contemptuous Joel’ try looking at the bigger picture. Concentrate on the task at hand and ask yourself why you took the job in the first place.

Ultimately, your work is what really matters as that’s what will help you grow and succeed. Have a good time in your present company and do a fantastic job that inflates the value of your resume.

2.     Look at the bright side

Every person that we encounter in life can teach us something. Agreed your boss might not be the brightest bulb in the box but he/she may possess some qualities that you can surely absorb. So, watch and learn! Maybe it’s their enthusiastic nature or positive outlook, their amazing communication skills or their handle over delegation which is always on point! You could take a leaf out of their book on any such quality that you seemingly lack but admire in them.

Don’t disregard your boss just because you think yourself to be all high and mighty. Find qualities in your boss that are commendable and respect them for it. When you do this, you look o the bright side of the situation which will surely help you in your dealings with your boss.

3.     Don’t be full of yourself

When you find yourself in a situation like this, you will easily become too full of yourself in absolutely no time at all. You need to make real time effort into not being too pompous and overconfident at your workplace because nobody really appreciates that kind of behaviour. If you continue carrying that attitude around, your overconfidence is bound to permeate in your body language which can prove to be highly unfavourable for your career.

Always confront your ideas and surround yourself with people who do the same. Keep in mind that just because you feel you’re better than your boss; it does not make you a know-it-all. As we all know, learning is not stunted and it never really stops.  Once you come to terms with that, it will work wonders for you in terms of growth in the workplace and in your career.

Remember you have to pay the bills, secure your family’s future and leave something behind in your Will template for your kids. You won’t be able to do that if you toss your career away just because you were smarter. So stay grounded and be modest as these are the qualities that will make you a better leader in the future.

When you’ve got more brains than your boss, it can be a rather tricky situation to be in but if you look at it with the right attitude, it can tip the scales in your favour. All of us have our flaws so stop bleating about it and work collaboratively with your boss as a team. Look at the bigger picture always and be innovative and an essential and irreplaceable employee so as to make your career successful. Remember, there is no “I” in team!
